Low slope
What the job actually involves.
Most houses around here have at least one section that is not really a roof pitch at all: a porch, an addition, the flat piece over a garage, or a dormer cheek that runs almost level. Shingle is not rated for it, and shingle is what a lot of those sections have, which is why they are the part of the house that leaks first.
A low-slope section needs a membrane or a rolled system with the seams and terminations detailed properly, and it needs the water to have somewhere to go. Ponding is the thing that kills these sections: water that sits after a rain is water finding a seam. Fixing that is sometimes a matter of the system and sometimes a matter of the fall.

The Difference
The part that decides whether it holds up.
It is a small job in square footage and a fiddly one in detail, which is why it often gets left off a quote or priced as if it were the same as the rest of the roof. It is not, and it gets priced on its own.

Low slope, answered.
Why does my porch roof keep leaking?
Almost always because it is shingled and its pitch is too low for shingle, or because water is ponding on it and finding a seam. Both are fixable and neither is fixed by another layer of shingle.
Can you do just that section?
Yes. Low-slope sections are commonly done on their own, and they are priced on their own rather than folded into a square-foot number for the whole roof.
What goes on instead of shingle?
A membrane or rolled system rated for the pitch, with the seams and terminations detailed for standing water. Which one depends on the deck, the fall and what it ties into.
Will it match the rest of the roof?
It will not look like shingle, because it is not shingle. On most houses the section is not visible from the street, and where it is, that gets discussed before anything is ordered.
