Water travels. It comes in at a failed flashing or a split boot, runs along a rafter or the top of the decking, and shows up on a ceiling two rooms away. So a repair starts by finding the entry point rather than patching above the stain, which means the attic side as well as the roof, and it means looking at the details that fail rather than the field that usually does not.
The usual culprits are boring and consistent: pipe boots that have gone brittle, step flashing at a wall that was never woven in properly, valleys where two planes carry more water than the detail was built for, and nail pops that have worked their way through a shingle over a decade of heat. An attic leak can often be repaired and run through insurance so that as much as possible is covered.

Can you find a leak that only shows in heavy rain?
Usually, yes. Intermittent leaks are almost always a detail rather than the field, and the details that fail under volume are a short list: valleys, wall flashing, boots and anywhere two planes meet. The attic side narrows it down fast.
Is a repair worth it on an old roof?
Sometimes. If the roof has years left and one detail has failed, a repair is the right answer. If the field is worn out and the repair is the third one, you are paying twice. You get told which situation you are in.
Will insurance cover a repair?
It depends on the cause. Storm damage often is covered; wear and age are not. The repair gets documented either way, so you have the evidence if there is a claim to make.
How fast can somebody come out?
