Storm damage

What the job actually involves.

Northeast Tarrant sits under storm tracks that come through most springs, and hail damage is rarely obvious from the ground. Bruising on an asphalt shingle looks like nothing from the driveway and reads clearly from four feet away. Wind damage shows up as creased tabs and lifted edges along one plane rather than across the whole roof. Both matter, and both have a window in which a carrier will still look at them.

The inspection is the perimeter first, then the roof plane by plane: field, valleys, boots, vents, and the flashing where a roof meets a wall. Soft metal takes the clearest impressions, so gutters, downspouts, vents and any exposed flashing get looked at as evidence, not just as things that may need replacing. The attic side of the decking gets checked wherever it can be reached.

The Difference

The part that decides whether it holds up.

Sometimes the answer is that nothing needs doing yet. That is worth saying out loud, because the alternative is a claim filed on a hunch and denied, which is worse for the homeowner than doing nothing. And if a job is not one we should take, you get pointed at somebody who should, with a follow-up call afterwards to check it went well.

Before You Call

Storm damage, answered.

How long after a storm can I file?

Carriers set their own deadlines and they vary, so the practical answer is do not wait. Damage that is a year old is harder to attribute to a specific date, and a roof that has been leaking quietly since a storm can turn a covered claim into a maintenance argument.

Can you tell from the ground?

No, and neither can anybody else. Hail bruising and wind creasing are things you have to be on the roof to see, which is why the inspection is a walk rather than a look.

My neighbour just had theirs done. Should I?

Possibly. Hail falls in bands, so a street can be hit and the next one over untouched, and one house on a street can take it worse than the rest depending on slope and exposure. It is a reason to have it looked at, not a reason to file.

What if the roof is fine?

Then you are told it is fine. The inspection costs nothing and you get the photographs either way.
